There is nothing quite as satisfying as a dramatic "Before & After" reveal. If you are living with a dark, enclosed 1980s kitchen in Bellevue, it can be incredibly difficult to visualize its true potential. Seeing how similar homes in the Pacific Northwest have completely transformed their spaces is the best way to kickstart your own inspiration.
The most dramatic transformations usually involve removing a load-bearing wall to create an open concept, or completely replacing dark cabinetry with light, natural wood tones to maximize natural light.
Transformation 1: The Dark 90s Cave to a Bright Modern Oasis
Before: A classic late-90s Eastside kitchen. Honey oak cabinets that stopped a foot below the ceiling, dark speckled granite that absorbed all the light, and a massive, awkwardly angled peninsula that choked off the dining room.
After: By tearing out the peninsula and replacing it with a large, rectangular center island featuring white quartz with subtle gray veining, the traffic flow was instantly restored. We installed custom ceiling-height shaker cabinets painted in a soft dove gray, which immediately made the ceilings feel two feet taller. The result is a kitchen that feels twice as large without adding a single square foot.
Transformation 2: The Enclosed Galley to an Open Concept Dream
Before: An older mid-century home in Newport Hills featured a cramped galley kitchen entirely cut off from the living room by a load-bearing wall. The cook was isolated, and the kitchen received zero natural light from the living room's beautiful floor-to-ceiling windows.
After: We engineered and installed a massive flush steel beam in the ceiling, allowing us to completely remove the dividing wall. We replaced the wall with an expansive 10-foot waterfall edge island. Now, the homeowners have an unobstructed view of the evergreens outside while cooking, and the entire main floor feels like a unified luxury estate.
You don't always have to move walls for a dramatic "After." Simply upgrading your lighting scheme—adding recessed cans, under-cabinet LEDs, and statement pendants—can completely transform the mood and functionality of a space.
Transformation 3: The Cluttered Chaos to Minimalist Zen
Before: A busy family kitchen where appliances, mail, and cooking utensils permanently lived on the countertops due to a severe lack of functional storage inside the cabinets.
After: We designed a highly specialized storage system. We replaced base cabinets with deep, heavy-duty drawer stacks, installed a custom appliance garage with pocket doors to hide the blender and espresso machine, and built a floor-to-ceiling pantry with roll-out shelves. The countertops are now permanently pristine.
"A great Before and After isn't just about making a room look prettier; it's about fundamentally changing how a family interacts and lives within their home."
